This autobiography begins in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Beirut, and from there moves back in time to the Warsaw ghetto, where Mark Halter was born, just before the war. That "uncommon childhood" is further complicated by his underground wartime escape from Poland to Russia, by his return to a devastated Warsaw, and by his subsequent move to Paris. The balance of the narrative relates the relentless efforts of Marek Halter to bring about peace between Arabs and Jews, Israelis and Palestinians. The book is peopled with the famous and the infamous - from David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir to Gamal Abdel Nasser and Yasir Arafat.
