Dean of St Paul's, John Donne was feted in his day not just as a poet but also as an inspired and inspiring preacher, and these four extended meditations on death are amongst his most powerful and dramatic writings. Originally a Catholic, the poet and preacher John Donne (1572-1631) joined the established Church and became Dean of St Paul's. He is best known for his metaphysical poetry, which includes sonnets, satires and elegies.
