In The Bethany We Know, Penny Roker explores the idea of relationship, particularly in a community context, through an examination of scripture stories that take place in and around the village of Bethany. This area near Jerusalem was a home away from home for Jesus, a place like any other with its great loves and friendships, its sufferings and petty conflicts. In understanding more about Jesus relationships, and the lessons garnered from them, we can better nurture our own. With suggestions for personal and group reflection, The Bethany We Know illuminates key scripture passages, from the Good Samaritan to the raising of Lazarus, and is intended for anyone wishing to fortify their communication skills or rekindle even the most jaded of friendships. The Bethany We Know demonstrates how, in order for our relationships to thrive, we must set aside our own prejudices and take time to truly understand the other in a spirit of generosity and acceptance.
