Softcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Science need not be dull and bogged down by jargon, as Richard Dawkins proves in this entertaining look at evolution. The themes he takes up are the concepts of altruistic and selfish behaviour; the genetical definition of selfish interest; the evolution of aggressive behaviour; kinshiptheory; sex ratio theory; reciprocal altruism; deceit; and the natural selection of sex differences. 'Should be read, can be read by almost anyone. It describes with great skill a new face of the theory of evolution.' W.D. Hamilton, Science Solid binding. Published by Close's letters: 17 and 24 April both on letterhead of Coytbury St. Giles's Hill Winchester; Douglas's letter: 23 April 1926 on letterhead of the Hydrographic Department Admiralty Whitehall London S.W.1, 1926
All three letters good, on lightly aged paper. Close's first letter (12mo, 2 pp): He is pleased to hear 'that Professor O. T. Jones is convalescent and back at work'. Close will write to him to ask if he will take part in the 'Commission' on the 'Terrasses littorales'. Having none 'handy', he is writing to the Admiralty Hydrographer for a 'list of Admiralty Charts'. The Closes have 'settled to take a house in Jersey for the children's holidays', so there is 'little chance of our being at Oxford for the British Association meeting'. 'It is very hard to find a small house in this neighbourhood.' Close's second letter (12mo, 1 p, in stamped, addressed, postmarked envelope): He is sending on the Admiralty charts from 'Captain Douglas, the Hydrographer'. 'You will see from the enclosed that you can keep the Catalogue. I hope that you will find in it what you want.' Douglas's letter (4to, 1 p): 'In this Catalogue [not present] will be found an Alphabetical list as well as a Geographical list of Charts, and in the end of the Cantalogue Index maps showing, amongst others, Charts of the Mediterranean: there will also be found an Index map of the Sailing Directions. I do not think I can do better than let him have this Catalogue, which he is quite at liberty to retain for future reference.'.

Book First Edition
1st Edition, 8vo (22cm), (ii),604pp, recent quarter green calf. Decent of Man Review: p.195-235. Binding tight. No previous names. Some foxing to first and last few leaves. One of the earliest reviews of Darwin's Descent is presented with analysis of two freshly published, related works: Wallace's 'Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection' and Mivart's 'On the Genesis of Species'. The Descent of Man first appeared in February 1871 and this review, published in July of that year, is a scathing one warning readers of the impending dangers posed by Darwin's views. The anonymous author was the palaeontologist William Boyd Dawkins (18371929), who - curiously - was not only a beneficiary of Darwin's patronage but had a long-standing and very warm correspondence with the author of the 'Origin', and had publicly declared himself in favour of Darwin's theories. Not only that, Dawkins' copy of the Descent was a gift from Darwin himself and (in a sycophantic note of thanks) he gushed that he was "devouring" the book! It has been argued (see Meiring, H.: Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, Volume 89, October 2021, pp 267-282) that Dawkins feigned a pro-Darwinian stance in order to promote himself as a relevant and important Scientist of the Victorian era, while - in secret - attempting to discredit Darwin and dismantle his arguments through anonymous reviews such as this one.
