Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. Winslow Homer, 21 years old in 1861, spent the next four years of his life as "Special Artist" for Harper's Weekly, creating a pictorial history of the Civil War's battlefields and campgrounds as he saw them from the Union side of the conflict. Originally published by Abrams in 1977, this first printing of the second edition is about 11 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches. 204 pages in dark blue cloth-covered boards with silver lettering on the spine, containing 202 illustrations, including 39 plates in full color -- nearly all of Homer's oils, drawings, watercolors, wood engravings and lithographs produced between 1861 and 1865, as well as a comprehensive bibliography. Boards and text are clean, complete and unmarked, no tearing or bumping. Not remaindered. The heavy-duty dustjacket, with a full color reproduction of the oil painting, "Prisoners from the Front," on the front panel and a pair of pencil drawings on the back panel, shows a few light scratches on back panel (none breaking surface), o/w minimal wear of any kind. No tearing, no creasing or chipping, not price-clipped. This book provides a different view of Homer than is usually seen. [Due to book's size and weight, priority/express orders and orders from outside the U.S. will require additional postage.].
