[It] includes virtually his entire artistic production from 1861 to 1865 in all mediums - oils, drawings, watercolors, wood engravings, and lithographs, superbly reproduced and accompanied by battle maps, contemporary photographs. illuminating commentaries. [The] battleground became both his school and his studio. At first he thrilled to the drama and heroism of battle, depicting what he saw with great realism, but as the agony dragged on, he recoiled from the scenes of death and turned to life among the men in camp, with its moments of humor, camaraderie, and boredom. His art brought the look and feel of the war home to his countrymen. Although Homer accompanied the Union army and presented the war from the Northern viewpoint, he perceived the tragedy inherent in civil warfare and portrayed both victor and vanquished with sympathy and dignity."
